Sheriff Lott holds a Press Conference at RCSD Headquarters to discuss an organized scam by inmates.

Sheriff Leon Lott announces fraud-related charges against multiple Georgia prisoners.

In October, 2025, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department initiated an investigation into a series of ruthless scam calls targeting victims in Richland County, SC. Following an extensive investigation, RCSD has identified 9 suspects, prisoners, involved in these cruel scams, all inside Georgia correctional facilities.

Inmates are using public arrest records to collect victims’ contact information. Using contraband cell phones, from inside the prison, they call victims and pretend to be law enforcement officers or other officials.

Acting as an “official”, the suspects convince trusting victims a loved one is incarcerated and in urgent need of money for reasons such as bond, ankle monitors, or pretrial release. Suspects use fear tactics to coerce victims into sending money via methods like prepaid cards or cryptocurrency.

These predatory inmates have defrauded victims of significant amounts of money ranging from $500 to $25,000.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department reminds the public:

  • Law enforcement will never call to request any fine, fee, or bond.

  • Always verify information directly with the detention center or a trusted official source.

  • Be cautious of urgent demands for payment and threats of increased penalties.

  • Never send money or provide personal information to unknown callers.

Investigators continue to receive reports that these scams are still occurring. If you receive a suspicious call or believe you have been targeted by this scam, please contact the Richland County Sheriff’s Department immediately at 803-576-3000.
