UPDATE - News Release: Homicide on I-20E, Road Closure

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a homicide that occurred in the early morning hours of February 23, 2026.
On February 23, 2026, just after 2:00am, RCSD was notified that the South Carolina Highway Patrol had responded to a single vehicle collision on I-20 eastbound and requested RCSD’s assistance after discovering evidence that the victim may have been shot.
Upon arrival, deputies confirmed one deceased victim on scene. Deputies notified RCSD investigators and crime scene. At that time, the interstate was temporarily shut down due to the investigation.
Investigators are still working to determine exactly where the shooting occurred and what circumstances led to the shooting.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is actively investigating a homicide on I-20 eastbound. I-20E between Alpine Road and Clemson Road is closed at this time.
This is an isolated incident; investigators do not believe there to be a public safety threat at this time.
RCSD will provide updates via Press Box when the roadway is opened back up.
