Sheriff Leon Lott announces the arrest of Hayley Johnston (23) following an accidental shooting that injured a young child.
On March 23, 2026, around 7:30pm, deputies responded to an apartment complex at the 8700 block of Windsor Lake Boulevard in reference to a single gunshot victim. Upon arrival, deputies located a young child, under the age of 7, with a single gunshot wound to the lower body. The child was transported by EMS to a local hospital for treatment. At this time, the child is in stable condition.
Further investigation revealed that the child was unsupervised when they gained access to Johnston’s unsecured firearm; the firearm was being stored in a closet that also contained children’s snacks. The child was injured as the result of an accidental discharge. Two other children were present in the home and were not injured. RCSD investigators notified the Department of Social Services.
Johnston is charged with three counts of Unlawful Conduct Toward a Child. She was transported to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center where she awaits a bond hearing.
