Taxi driver dies after being shot

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott states that on September 16, 2011 Nicholas Rivers (DOB 7-4-91) of Camden called for a taxi cab and demanded to be taken to California. When the driver was not able to take him there, he asked the driver to take him to Columbia.

The driver exited I-20 at Two Notch Road and dropped Rivers off at the Waffle House located at 7505 Two Notch Road, Columbia. The Sheriff added that Rivers then robbed her, forced her to call him another cab, and then stole her cell phone. When Rivers exited the cab, she drove away.

When the second cab arrived, Rivers got in and shot the cab driver multiple times -- the victim exited the car and went into the Waffle House.

Around 4:00 PM Deputies responded to a call of shots fired at the Waffle House. When they arrived they found the male victim had been shot - the victim died as a result of his wounds. Rivers stole the Checker Yellow cab and drove onto I-20.

Richland County Sheriff's Deputies located and attempted a traffic stop on Rivers; at which time a vehicle pursuit ensued. The pursuit continued into Kershaw and Lee Counties. Rivers exited at HWY 34 and continued towards Camden. The chase ended in Kershaw County near the Camden City lines where Rivers shot himself. He was flown to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff Lott adds that the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, and Deputies from Kershaw County Sheriff's Department and the Camden Police Department acted in a collaborative effort to apprehended Rivers.
