On March 3, 2011 Deputy Sara Giron was forced to shoot Antonio Davis who pointed a handgun at her; after he fled on foot from a traffic stop. Immediately following the incident Sheriff Leon Lott returned Deputy Giron to full duty because the shooting was completely justified. SheriffLott contacted the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to complete a review of the circumstances behind the incident and to turn their findings over to the Solicitor’s Office. On April 29, 2011 Solicitor Dan Johnson issued his findings of the incident, stating that Deputy Giron used the force reasonable to stop the threat against her and the community. Solicitor Johnson’s findings were that Deputy Giron acted legally and justifiably based on the circumstances presented to her that day. Sheriff Lott stated that law enforcement puts on the uniform every day to protect and serve our communities – they have to make tough decisions in response to other peoples actions, that more often than not put the cops in harms way. The Sheriff added that Deputy Giron is a very effective and dedicated Deputy who works daily fighting crime and making Richland County a safer place for our citizens.
