In a ceremony held today at the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Leon Lott honored United States Army Captain Rodney D. Jackson for service to his country and to the citizens of Richland County. Sheriff Leon Lott honored Captain Jackson because on September 12, 2010, Captain Jackson rescued an unconscious, undercover deputy from a burning vehicle. Sheriff Leon Lott stated that around 8:30 PM on I-26 near St. Andrews Road Captain Jackson was riding his motorcycle along with some friends. One of his fellow riders was involved in a traffic accident and Captain Jackson stopped to assist that rider in getting out of the interstate. Meanwhile, near the accident scene, a vehicle’s rear end was protruding into a lane of travel causing the undercover deputy to strike that vehicle. This impact propelled the undercover agent’s car into oncoming traffic whereafter the deputy’s vehicle was struck a second time causing his vehicle to burst into flames. Without hesitation or fear for his own life, Captain Jackson approached the burning vehicle. Using his own strength, Captain Jackson physically pried the door open, entered the vehicle, and successfully pulled the deputy to safety. Captain Rodney Jackson is a ten year veteran in the United States Army and has a wife and two daughters. Sheriff Lott stated that not only does Captain Jackson daily place himself in harm’s way to defend our country, but on September 12, 2010 he put himself in harm’s way to save the life of a Richland County Deputy. Sheriff Lott added that Captain Jackson is to be commended for his service to the United States of America and to be praised for his selfless act that saved our deputy’s life.
