Sheriff’s In-House Database Nabs Sexual Assault Suspect

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrest of Edward Dunn (DOB: 11/18/93) for Burglary, Robbery, and Aggravated Assault.

Sheriff Lott states that at 10:30 AM on Thursday, June 02, 2011 the Richland County Sheriff’s Department Fugitive Task Force, in conjunction with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, arrested Dunn at 2121 Gayley Street, Columbia, SC.

At 4:30 AM on Saturday, May 28, 2011 (in Lower Richland County) Richland County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a home invasion. When deputies arrived they found that Dunn, armed with a handgun, had attempted to sexually assault the victim, ransacked the bedroom, took money and fled the scene.

Dunn was arrested by developing leads, questioning neighbors in the area and acquaintances of Dunn. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department DNA Lab was able to match Dunn’s DNA from the scene of the crime to a swab taken when he was arrested in September for an unrelated crime. In September that swab was placed into an in house database created by the Sheriff. Sheriff Lott stated, having this crime lab in house, reduced the turn around time to help positively identify Dunn.
