Man Arrested for Impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrest of Andrew James Addy (DOB: 08/14/70) who was wanted for Impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer and Impersonating a Public Official for Sham Legal Process.

Richland County Sheriff’s Department arrested Addy at 10:00 AM on July 19, 2011—Addy was currently detained at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on unrelated charges when he was charged with this case. Sheriff Lott stated that on numerous occasions Addy posed as a law enforcement deputy with Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

On June 14, 2011 Addy contacted the victim at her place of employment and told her he was a Richland County Sheriff’s Department Narcotics Agent/Investigator and that he had a warrant for her arrest. Addy further stated he would make the warrant go away if she would give him $150.00. The victim met with Addy (who represented himself as a Richland County Sheriff’s Department Narcotics Agent/Investigator) and gave him $40.00 and told him she would give him more at a later time.

After further investigation Addy was identified through acquaintances and information provided from concerned citizens - - Sheriff Lott stated that if you feel you may have been a victim of this scam to please come forward by calling Crimestoppers. It is common practice for Richland County Sheriff’s Department Deputies to properly identify themselves with proper credentials. Furthermore, Richland County Sheriff’s Deputies will never ask for or collect money from any individual for any crime committed.

Addy was arrested and already detained in the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
