Sheriff recommends free online system to help citizens keep track of valuables

Richland county sheriff RECOMMENDS free online system to help citizens keep track of valuables --- COMPUTERS, guns, jewelry and so much more

Sheriff Lott wants to help citizens keep track of important information that can help track down stolen property faster and help bring greater awareness to the need of all citizens to take precautions on preventing burglaries. For more than 14 years Sheriff Leon Lott has stood on the premise that an empowered citizen greatly decreases crime and victimization. In this regard, the Sheriff continues to offer FREE services like free security analysis of your home or business by the Community Action Team, DATA Dots education, training and services and now is offering another Free tool that will help in the fight against burglaries.

Sheriff Lott is encouraging all residents to use a free online system that will help keep track of valuables, personal property and important information. The system is an online service that allows people to record serial numbers and uploads images for jewelry, phones, electronics, and other valuables. Should those items ever be stolen, having the information will go a long way in accurately and quickly identifying your property. Citizens can access the site at reportit.leadsonline.com and begin the steps toward making your home safer. The Sheriff adds that marrying the personal property inventory with free security analysis by the CAT Deputies, along with crime watches and vigilant neighbors will tremendously improve the safety in our communities.

Sheriff Lott is advising citizens to use LeadsOnline, to store an unlimited number of serial numbers, item descriptions, pictures, and scans of receipts so items may be more easily identified in the event of a theft. This record may also come in handy when filing claims with insurance providers in the event of loss. Citizens wanting to participate in Report It can register for the free service at reportit.leadsonline.com and begin building their personal property inventory list. The Sheriff stated that this service is only accessible by the citizens who actually store the information and law enforcement will not have access to it unless citizens provide in the event a burglary or theft occurs.

The ReportIt service is a part of LeadsOnline, the online system that works with police across the country to track and recover stolen property. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department has used LeadsOnlline since 2005 to help track and recover stolen property --- everything from jewelry to sporting equipment to electronics, computers, cameras, and other items such as designer clothing, collectibles, and other items with invaluable personal worth. The system allows detectives to search for the items using a variety of parameters, including item descriptions and serial numbers.  When an item is sold to a pawn or secondhand shop, the product information is entered in the LeadsOnline database and is immediately viewable by participating law enforcement agencies across the country.

Sheriff Leon Lott is asking all citizens to join or start a crime watch in their community, take advantage of the free services that the Sheriff’s Department offers and to be an extra set of eyes and ears for law enforcement – to report all suspicious activity immediately.  The Sheriff adds that an involved community will prevent crime, and God forbid a crime occurs will help capture those responsible for it.

LeadsOnline (www.leadsonline.com) is the nation’s largest online investigative system used by more than 3,000 law enforcement agencies to recover stolen property and solve crimes. Each day, millions of items are added to the LeadsOnline database by businesses including second-hand stores, scrap metal recyclers, pawnshops, and Internet drop-off stores across all 50 states. Those records are instantly available to law enforcement agencies, meaning crimes can be solved in seconds, not months. The LeadsOnline system, compatible with the NCIC, serves as an indispensable, efficient, and money-saving resource for detectives because it provides a cross-jurisdictional, instantaneous, and accurate database that stops criminals from escaping detection by selling stolen items in another city. An official eBay partner, LeadsOnline helps prevent illegal transactions on the eBay website by giving law enforcement access to the world’s largest online marketplace through automatic upload of all eBay transactions into the LeadsOnline database. LeadsOnline also includes LeadsOnlabs, a system for tracking those involved in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamines; a Metal Theft Investigation System designed to track copper and other metal thefts; and cross-checks names of pawn customers against the OFAC SDN list of known terrorists and narcotics traffickers. Each year, LeadsOnline is credited with recovering millions of dollars in stolen goods and solving thousands of crimes that are often associated with bigger crimes, such as homicide, identity theft, and arson.
