Crime Prevention tools and tips lead to arrest

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced today that the use of crime prevention techniques and tools led to the arrest of several suspects trying to burglarize a residence and a local retailer.

Sheriff Lott states on November 29, 2009 at approximately 6:45 PM deputies responded to a burglar alarm call on Wade Street - responding deputies observed two juveniles fleeing from the rear of the home. Deputies’ quick response to the properly working burglar alarm led to the capture of the two juveniles. The juveniles had made entry through the rear of the home by unknown means, and were attempting to steal several DVD’s, CD’s and a firearm when they were captured.

At approximately 10:30 PM on November 29, 2009 Joseph L. Wider (DOB: 03-20-90), Darius Floyd (04-18-91), and Christopher Trice (10-14-88) attempted to burglarize a business located at 8708 Two Notch Road. A witness heard suspicious noises and notified deputies right away. Because the witness was alert, aware of their surroundings and is a concerned member of their community; deputies were able to quickly respond to the business that was being burglarized and apprehend the suspects as they were trying to flee on foot.

Sheriff Lott reminds citizens that having a properly installed and working burglar alarm system is another tool that will reduce the chances of them becoming a victim. All citizens should be aware of their surroundings at all times, be vigilant, and report any suspicious activity to your local law enforcement agency.
