Sheriff asked to investigate death of prisoner at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center

Sheriff Leon Lott states that on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 11:18 PM, Matthew Green (DOB: 03/17/53) was charged with Public Intoxication by the Forest Acres Police Department and transported to 201 John Mark Dial Boulevard (Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center). While being booked into the above location Green was restrained by a detention center officer -- he was then placed into a holding cell. Detention Center officials stated that around midnight while checking on Green, he was found to be unresponsive and was transferred to the Dorn Veterans Administration Hospital where he died on Wednesday, August 24, 2011.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts determined that Green suffered blunt force trauma to the neck which caused his death. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department was contacted by the coroner’s office on Thursday, August 25, 2011 to investigate this incident. The investigation is continuing and the results will be forwarded to the Fifth Circuit Solicitor, Dan Johnson for review and determination of charges if appropriate.
