Sheriff Leon Lott is proud to announce that the Richland County Sheriff’s Department received several awards at the South Carolina Association of School Resource Officers (SCASRO) Conference this past week. T he conference took place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina August 2, 2009 thru August 7, 2009. The annual conference brings School Resource Officers from various agencies together to attend courses geared toward educating our youth as well as ensuring their safety through the school year. { SCASRO was developed by a group of twenty-three School Resource Officers (SRO) in 1996. These SRO’s saw a need to have a statewide organization for officers to contact on what programs were working and which ones were not, how to handle certain situations, and to be a clearinghouse for lesson plans. SCASRO developed into an organization that is now recognized nationally}. The message for the SCASRO Conference 2009 was “Law Enforcement and Educators-Putting it together…building for success” in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Education and South Carolina Educational Resource Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Each year SCASRO presents numerous prestigious awards during their awards banquet. The keynote speaker for this year’s banquet was Deputy Chief Randy Scott who discussed the importance of having School Resource Officers and the invaluable services they provide throughout the school year.
