Investigative Units Special Victims Send a crime tip |
The Special Victims Unit handles all sexual assaults, any sexual related criminal offense such as peeping tom, and crimes involving unlawful touching or sexual exploitation of juveniles. The crime of criminal sexual assault is a very serious felony with a maximum sentence of 30 years (85% mandatory service time prior to parole eligibility). Based upon this fact, coupled with the needed sensitivity pertaining to the required victim interaction, our sex crimes investigators are a highly trained and veteran group possessing a special ability to handle these cases. This unit investigates all child and elder abuse cases, which generally involve physical abuse, neglect or exploitation. Two investigators within the unit are designated to work missing persons cases. These investigators assure the Departments Missing Persons Report is up to date and the appropriate entries have been made into the National Crime Information Center's database. Each of these cases is treated with the utmost attention, as missing persons cases can lead investigators to determine that serious crimes have taken place. In other cases, no crime has been committed, but there are underlying issues that caused the disappearance. The investigator then provides assistance, when requested, in resolving these issues. This unit also supervises the County sex offender registry. According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, Richland County has more active sex offenders (849) than any other county in the State. Sex Offenders are currently required to register two times a year and register any employment or attendance at any schools within the state. Richland County Sheriff's Department is also a member of the SC Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Investigators assigned to this task force are from the Special Victims Unit. These investigators are trained to perform investigations of child sexual exploitation and child pornography as it relates to the use of the Internet. A major portion of their work is performing undercover sting operations in chat rooms in order to catch the child predators that are lurking in cyber space. The Task Force members also give Internet Safety presentations upon request. We have age appropriate presentations for the parents and adults, middle and high school, 3rd through 6th grades and K through 2nd grade. If your organization would like to schedule and Internet Safety presentations, email a request to sheriff@rcsd.net. |
