The Robbery Unit is comprised of two
investigators who are supervised by a sergeant.
These investigators are assigned all business robberies, carjackings, and
home invasions. Armed Robbery is considered one of the most violent
crimes, with the exception of murder and criminal sexual conduct. Based on
that fact, coupled with a maximum potential sentence of 30 years for the
offenders (with 85% mandatory service time prior to parole eligibility),
these cases are handled with added scrutiny, attention to detail, and
meticulous follow-up. |

Many of the cases are challenged by the
offenders in court by way of jury trials as the charged individuals
have so much at stake if convicted of the maximum sentence. The
robbery team is comprised of our finest and most tenacious veteran
investigators. Members of this team often times are additionally
recruited for homicide investigations as well. |

Sgt. Shawn

(803) 576-3081 |
The Cold Case Squad
was formed to reactivate and review previously unsolved homicides. The
Squad is made up of experienced investigators. Using a combination of new
forensic technology, computer databases, re-interviewing of witnesses and
review of the original investigation, investigators have been able to
develop new approaches and strategies to the cases. The Richland County
Cold Case Squad was formed to provide closure to family members of those
who have been murdered and hold offenders accountable for what they have
done.
The Cold Case Squad was able to solve a 1961 homicide of a cab driver in
Richland County. |
|
John Orner was shot in the head and left on
the side of the road in a remote section of the County in February of
1961.Through
diligence and hard work, ballistic matches linked the murder weapon to the
suspect, Edward Frieburger. Mr. Frieburger was originally a suspect in the
case after it became known that he had purchased a similar type weapon in
the community on the same date and had been in trouble on post at nearby
Fort Jackson. The weapon was recovered and languished in evidence for
years until the evidence was re-examined by detectives. As a result of the
detectives' fresh approach to the case the weapon was matched conclusively
to the crime scene and Mr. Frieburger was arrested. Frieburger was
convicted in the summer of 2002 and is currently serving a life sentence
for murder and the Orner family now has a sense of closure to a painful
time in their lives. |
