Youth Advisory Board Representative for SC

Maria Verdugo

Contact the DARE Training Center to schedule her as a speaker for your DARE graduations

Maria is a sophomore at her High School in South Carolina.  Although Maria was born in Arizona, she has lived in South Carolina since she was three years old.  Maria comes from a very large family being the oldest daughter in the family, she is constantly being observed and emulated by her younger siblings; she is a wonderful role model.

Maria is very involved with her school, church and community.  Maria consistently excels in school; currently she has a 3.36 GPA.  She is very active in school activities, which include: varsity cheerleading, junior varsity soccer, varsity wrestling, junior varsity softball, and Ms. High.  She also assists with school related community service projects such as winter days, which helps provide food and clothing to the poor.

Maria is a very active member of her Presbyterian church. She is a member of the youth advisory council and a youth group member.  The summer of 2008, Maria spent two weeks in Mexico on a mission trip in which she helped build a church for a small village.  Annually, she is involved in organizing an outreach children’s Christmas party for needy families in the community.  In fact, Maria is so passionate about helping others that she even had lemonade stands in her own yard to raise money for the Make a Wish Foundation, and grew her hair out in order to donate it to Locks for Love.

In addition to her school and church activities, Maria volunteers her time with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.  She is an assistant women’s self-defense course instructor.  Maria helps train girls and women skills to defend themselves against a possible attacker.

Maria Verdugo is an outstanding and accomplished young lady.  She is a graduate of the DARE program and will serves as a Youth Advisory Board member (YAB) until she graduates from her high school.
